Challenge Prompts

HORIZONS 2025 CHALLENGE PROMPTS

This year, Horizons is challenging Designathon participants to learn and experience deep research and empathy as part of the design thinking process to consider important underlying factors such as equity, inclusivity, and accessibility. We narrowed the parameters so that participants can work with impact to our home, Los Angeles, and education. Here are our challenges:

PROMPT NO. 1: PREDICTIVE HEALTH & WELLNESS

Imagine a world where individuals can predict and prevent future health issues before they even begin. Your challenge is to design a futuristic preventive healthcare tool—whether a device, app, or new approach—that empowers people to take control of their health today. The solution should be simple, engaging, and fun, making proactive wellness accessible to all.

PROMPT NO. 2: RETHINKING AFFORDABLE & STUDENT HOUSING

What if finding affordable student housing in Los Angeles was no longer stressful, but empowering and community-driven? Your challenge is to design a bold, human-first solution that reimagines student living—not just in terms of rent, but also connection, adaptability, and support. Whether it’s a roommate matching platform, modular pop-up housing, or a digital tool for navigating leases and rights, your idea should make housing smarter and more accessible for all students.

PROMPT NO. 3: MINDFUL TECH

In a world where screens dominate our daily lives, how might we design tools that help people reclaim balance and combat digital addiction? Your challenge is to create a fun, engaging, and mindful solution—whether a device, app, or service—that promotes healthy tech habits without being restrictive. The goal is to empower users to manage screen time, prioritize mental well-being, and foster a more intentional relationship with technology.
